의학의 아버지라 불리는 히포크라테스는 “Ars longa, Vita brevis.[예술은 길고, 인생은 짧다.]”라는 말을 남겼습니다. 이 유명한 문장은 Ars를 기술, 즉 테크네(technē)가 아닌 예술(Art)로 오역해 탄생한 것으로, 본래 인간을 치료하는 기술인 ‘의술’을 익히고 베푸는 길은 끝이 없다는 의미를 담고 있습니다. 근대에 이르러 Ars가 점차 ‘미(美)’를 규범이나 목표로 하고 있는 활동으로서의 ‘예술’이라는 개념으로 사용되며 근사하게 오역된 셈입니다. ‘Ars longa’의 중첩된 의미처럼 의술과 예술이 만나는 지점에서 전시는 시작됩니다. 고대로부터 의술은 인간의 질병을 치료하고 생명을 다루는 기술로서 인류의 건강한 삶을 유지하는데 공헌하여 왔습니다. 히포크라테스 이래 의료인은 인간이 살아가면서 마주하게 되는 질병과 사고 현장에서 소명의식을 갖고 때로는 위험을 무릅쓰며 의술의 길을 걸어왔습니다. 도처에 질병이 도사리는 시대에 자신을 아끼지 않고 희생하는 의료인들을 기리고, 생명의 소중함과 인간의 존엄성에 대해 이야기하고자 이번 전시를 기획했습니다. 또한 올해는 특히 ‘의술’이라는 전시 주제에 맞춰, 창립 30주년을 맞는 의료전문지 “청년의사”와 공동 주관하여 진행합니다. 전시에서는 현대 예술 장신구 및 가구·오브제·설치 등의 분야를 포함해, 총 25명의 작가가 의술을 주제로 150여 점의 예술 작품을 선보입니다. 의학사적 측면에서 주술적 치료·신화·민간요법에 관한 작품, 내과·외과·산부인과·소아과·안과·피부과 등 전문과에서 다루는 신체기관이나 의료기구 및 약품을 구현한 작품을 만나볼 수 있습니다. 또한 병원 공간과 어울릴 만한 작품, 삶과 죽음에 관한 근원적인 철학 등 의술을 연상시키는 작품까지 전시에서 폭넓게 다룰 예정입니다. 전시는 의술과 예술 모두 인간의 육체적·정신적 질병과 상처를 치유하는데 도움이 되고, 삶에 풍요를 더하는 고귀한 가치를 지녔다는 것을 보여주고자 합니다. 한편 인생에 있어 완벽한 성취란 존재하지 않듯, 의술과 예술 역시 완성이라는 개념은 존재하지 않는다는 것을 시사하기도 합니다. 히포크라테스의 말처럼 “어떤 기술(Ars)을 충분히 익히기에 인생은 짧지만[Ars longa, Vita brevis.]”, 의료인으로서 또 예술가로서 자신의 길에 끊임없이 매진하고 있는 사람들 덕분에 인류는 계속 앞으로 나아갈 수 있었습니다. 의술을 주제로 한 예술 작품을 감상하는 심미적 경험을 통해, 양 분야를 새롭게 발견하고 공감하고 교류하는 장이 되기를 바랍니다.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, once said, “Ars longa, Vita brevis.” This famous aphorism has often been translated as “Art is long, life is short.” However, considering the original meaning of ars which aligns closer to the word ‘skillfulness (technē),’ the proverb denotes that learning and acquiring a medical skill takes so long that a lifetime may not be adequate. In the contemporary world, ‘ars’, mistranslated as fine art, is used to describe artistic practices that set the standard or goal for beauty. Like the dual meanings of ‘ars longa’, the exhibition begins at the point where medicine and art meet. Since ancient times, medicine, as a skill dealing with life to cure diseases, has contributed to maintaining a healthy life for humankind. Following the words of Hippocrates, healthcare professionals have walked the path of medical care through scenes of accidents and diseases humans encounter - even at times of risk. We planned this exhibition to commemorate the healthcare professionals who sacrificed themselves generously throughout the pandemic and discuss the preciousness of life and dignity of humanity. In accordance with this year's theme of medicine, the medical journal “Korean Doctors’ Weekly”, marking its 30th anniversary, will co-host this exhibition. A total of 25 artists from different fields, including contemporary art jewelry, furniture, object, and installation, will showcase around 150 artworks under the theme of medicine. As per the history of medicine, this exhibition will present works of not only folk medicine (including healing charms, mythology, and folk remedies), but also modern medicine that deals with organs, medical equipment, and drugs in specialized departments (such as internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, ophthalmology, and dermatology to list a few). In addition, the exhibition will cover a wide range of works associated with medical care, from pieces that suit a hospital environment to those that handle the primal philosophical themes of life and death. The exhibition aims to demonstrate that both medicine and art have noble values that help cure physical and mental illness and wounds to bring prosperity to life. Just as the perfect achievement in life is unattainable, there is no concept of perfection in medicine and in art. As Hippocrates remarks that “life is too short to master specific skills [Ars longa, Vita brevis]”, healthcare professionals and artists continuously work to walk their path and advance human life. I hope the exhibition will generate an appreciation for medical-themed artworks and provide new opportunities for connections, discoveries, and communication in both fields.
