이번 전시의 INFINITY와 BEYOND는 더 넓은 우주로 향하는 표현이다. 일 년이 안 되는 짧은 시간 동안 가까운 사람의 죽음을 기리고 새 생명의 탄생을 축복하는 일을 겪었다. 행복, 상실감, 누군가를 좋아하는 마음 등 수많은 감정을 느끼며, 그러한 감정들과 이야기를 작업에 담고자 하였다.
어린 시절 나는 우주에서 왔다고 믿었다. 이전 작업은 재질이 단단한 금속 표면에 바느질하여 비즈로 장식하는 거시적인 우주를 그렸다. 비즈를 사용해 인간을 구성하는 작은 요소를 나타내고, 아크릴 실은 별이 방출하는 에너지를 표현하였다.
이번 전시에서 중요하게 사용한 PVC는 미시적인 측면의 우주를 나타낸다. 광택이 도는 PVC의 유연함을 이용하여 단단한 금속과 상반되는 느낌을 주고자 금속 위에 바느질하였다. 상대적으로 부드럽고 형태의 변이가 용이한 천은 우주 안에서 벌어지는 여러 가지 감정들의 이야기라고 할 수 있다.
나는 금속에 구멍을 뚫고 그 위에 비즈를 직접 바느질 하듯이 꿰는데, 이는 하늘의 반짝이는 별과 인간을 구성하는 작은 요소를 표현한 것이다. 이번 작업에서는 기존의 은과 색박을 기본으로 PVC를 잘라 작품에 바느질하여 작업하였다.
For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love. 칼 세이건(Carl Sagan)은 우리처럼 작은 존재가 우주의 광대함을 견디는 방법은 오직 사랑뿐이라고 말했다. 우주는 광활한 미지의 공간이고 그러한 우주를 살아가는 삶의 한 부분은 차갑고 외로울 것이다. 하지만 무한한 공간을 함께 뛰어넘어 갈 사랑과 용기가 있다면 우주는 하나의 다정한 세계로 다가올 것이다. 그리고 내 작품은 착용했을 때 그런 따뜻함을 선사했으면 한다.

The INFINITY and BEYOND of this exhibition are expressions toward a wider universe. For a short time in less than a year, I went through the process of honoring the death of a close person and blessing the birth of a new born. I felt a lot of emotions such as happiness, loss, and loving someone, and tried to include those emotions and stories in my work.
When I was young, I believed I came from universe. Previous work expressed a macroscopic universe in which the material was sewn onto a hard metal surface and decorated with beads. Beads were used to represent small elements that make up humans, and acrylic threads expressed the energy emitted by stars.
The PVC, which was important in this exhibition, represents a microscopic universe. Using the flexibility of the glossy PVC, it was sewn on the metal to give the impression of being contrary to the hard metal. The fabric, which is relatively soft and easily transformed in shape, can be said to be the story of various emotions that take place in the universe.
I make a hole in the metal and sew the beads on it myself, representing the twinkling stars in the sky and the small elements that make up humans. In this work, the PVC was cut and sewn into the work based on the existing silver and colored silver leaf.
For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love. (Carl Sagan) The universe is a vast unknown space and a part of life living in such a universe would be cold and lonely. However, the universe will come as a friendly world if it has the love and courage to leap over infinite space together. And I want my work to give me that warmth when you wear it.
