자유로움 속에 자리한 질서
이번 전시의 작품들은 조형적으로 다소 반복된 수학적 규칙성을 형태에 반영하고 있는 것이 특징이다. 자연물을 향한 오랜 관심 속에서 관찰자의 의식은 보고 있는 대상의 구조에 대한 새로운 발견을 경험하게 된다. 외형상 자유롭고 불규칙적으로 보이는 자연물의 구조적 세부 메커니즘은 사실 정교한 규칙성에 바탕을 두고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그것은 자유로움 속에 숨겨진 질서 와도 같다.
다양한 식물을 접사로 찍어 유명한 독일의 사진작가 칼 브로스펠트(Karl Blossfeldt, 1865-1932)의 사진들은 각 식물만의 규칙적 구조와 유기적 조형성을 적나라하게 보여준다. 자연이 만들어 낸 놀라운 질서의 배열은 오랜 시간 예술가들이 추구해온 표현과는 비교도 안 되는 방대한 양과 다양함을 보여준다. 피상적으로 보이는 세계의 너머를 보려는 것이 창작자의 근원적 욕망이라고 한다면 보이는 것 이면에 자리한 보이지 않는 새로운 질서를 발견하는 것은 참으로 매력적이다.
최근 작업에서 나의 관심은 그렇게 표면 너머 은닉된 이면에 관한 것들이다. 장신구 작품은 누군가의 신체나 의상에 장식될 때 작품의 설치가 완성된다. 이것이 조각이나 회화 등 다른 미술작품의 일반적 설치와는 다른 점일 것이다. 감상의 주체에 따라서 놓여있는 정물이나 손안에 아름다운 기물이 되기도 하고 ‘진주 귀걸이를 한 소녀’를 바라보듯 한편의 회화적 구조가 되기도 한다. 따라서 장신구의 감상은 착용자와 그 착용자를 바라보는 제3자, 양자의 시선관계속에 동시에 자리한다. 그 점에 주목하여 나는 이번 전시의 작품형태에서 장신구의 뒷부분에 또다른 특별함을 더해 보고자 했다. 일반적으로 당연히 핀장식 혹은 고리와 같은 구조물이 있어야 할 뒷면에 자리한 숨겨진 작은 형태는 우연한 만남과 새로운 발견의 이야기를 담고 있다. 좌대에 놓인 기물로서 장신구와 착용된 장식으로서 장신구의 관계, 그리고 하나의 오브제 속에 발견되는 다름을 표현하고자 했다

Order in Freedom
The works of this exhibition feature the reflection of some repeated mathematical regularities on their forms. The consciousness of an observer who has examined a natural object with interest is bound to experience a new discovery of the structure of the object. We know that though the detail mechanisms in the structures of natural objects appear wild and irregular, they are actually based on elaborate regularities. That is like order hidden in freedom.
The photographs by Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932), a German photographer who is best known for his close-up photographs of plants, reveal the regular structure and organic form of each plant clearly. The amazing arrangement of order created by nature demonstrates a vast amount and diversity in its structure and form that cannot be compared with the expressions that artists have been pursuing for a long period of time. If the attempt to see beyond the superficial world is a underlying desire of artists, it is truly fascinating to discover a new invisible order behind the visible things.
Concerning my recent work, I am interested in things that are hidden beyond the surface of the world visible. A Jewelry artwork is completed when it is put on a person's body or clothes. This is a different point from the usual installation of other arts, such as sculpture and painting. Depending on viewers, jewelry art can be a still life or a beautiful object in the hand. Or it can be dedicated to the composition of a painting as if the pearl in the Girl with a Pearl Earring. Therefore, the appreciation of jewelry art is simultaneously done in the relationship between the wearer and the third person looking at the wearer. Paying attention to that point, I have tried to add another characteristic to the backs of jewelry artworks in the exhibition. The small shapes hidden in the backs of jewelry artworks, on which, in general, a pin or ring is set, contain a story of an accidental encounter or a tale of a new discovery. It was intended to express the relationship between a jewelry artwork placed on a pedestal as an object and a jewelry artwork on the clothes of a wearer, and a difference found as an object.
