장신구 속의 역설
인탈리오intagilo. 이탈리아어로 ‘파내거나 무엇을 새겨 넣는다’라는 뜻으로, 표면에 그림 무늬를 새겨 움푹 들어가게 만든 조각. 인탈리오는 음각에 의해 형상을 나타내는 것을 말한다. 주로 판화와 음각 세공물에 많이 쓰이며, 카메오Cameo와 대조되는 표현방식이다. 인탈리오 장신구에는 질문이 담긴다. 장신구는 양각의 입체물인가? 음각의 입체물인가? 답은 없거나 모호하다. 나는 음각으로 이루어진 장신구를 통해 양감의 이미지를 전한다. 양각의 이미지에 익숙한 우리에게 음각이 전달하는 메시지는 낯설고 신선하다. 보다 뚜렷하고 강렬할 수도 있다. 음각의 공간은 또한 내면의 이야기를 은유한다. 외부로 향한 직설보다 내부에 침잠한 이야기를 우회적으로 전달할 수 있다. 인탈리오 장신구에는 안과 밖이 공존하며 역설적인 조화를 이룬다.
석고붕대plaster bandage. 거즈에 석고를 묻혀 환자의 환부를 고정, 보호하는 의료도구. 환부에서 떨어져 나온 석고붕대에는 인체의 형상이 고스란히 간직된다. 몸의 일부가 떨어져 나간 듯, 석고붕대의 파편은 나에게 소멸되어야 할 부산물이 아닌, 기억되어야 할 기록으로 남는다. 석고붕대의 얇고 부서질 듯한 성질은 물에 닿으면 형태를 유지할 정도로만 단단하다. 나는 이 도구적 사물에 견고함을 더해 표현과 발언의 매체로 삼는다. 사물의 변신 혹은 차원 이동이라고 할 수 있다. 부드럽고 연약해 보이지만 강인한 매개체, 이 소재 속의 역설을 통해 나는 여성 내면의 이야기를 한다. 이들은 여성의 정체성을 드러내는 장신구가 된다.
자궁uterus. 여성의 몸속에 태아를 착상하여 자라게 하는 기관. 자궁은 모성의 상징물이다. 태아는 잉태되어 외부로부터 보호받으며 어머니의 몸속 자궁에서 자란다. 아기를 낳은 어머니는 자궁으로부터 해방됨과 동시에 모성을 상실한다. 자궁을 통해 들여다본 여성의 내면은 이중적인 이야기들로 가득하다. 사회 통념 속에 존재하는 모성 본능, 외유내강이라는 여성상, 따뜻하지만 엄격한 어머니, 연약하지만 강한 여성의 이미지는 존재하면서 부재하고 비어있으면서 차 있어야 하는 여성의 존재 의식의 일면이다. 인탈리오 장신구는 여성 스스로가 역설적 존재임을 자문하는 공간이다.

Paradox inside Ornaments
Intaglio. Sculpture created by deeply engraving pictures on the surface, meaning “carving out or engraving” in Italian. In other words, intaglio refers to figures made by engraving. This technique is generally used for prints and engraved craft works, contrasting with cameo. Intaglio ornaments contain a question: Are ornaments emboss objects or intaglio objects? The answer does not exist, and if any, is ambiguous. I deliver the image of emboss through the ornaments created by intaglio. The messages delivered by intaglio are new and strange to those who have become so familiar with the image of emboss. They can be more distinct and powerful. The spaces with intaglio also provide the metaphor of inner stories. They can indirectly convey the deep inside stories deep inside, rather than straight talk towards the outside. The inside and outside co-exist in intaglio ornament, achieving a paradoxical harmony.
Plaster bandage. A medical apparatus to fix and protect the affected part of a patient with gauze coated by plaster. The plaster bandage that is removed from the affecter part preserves the human figure as it is. As if a part of the body were removed, fragments of the plaster bandage remain a record to remember to me, instead of by-products to be extinct. With the aspect of being thin and fragile, the plaster bandage is just solid enough to keep its form when touched by water. I take this instrumental item as a medium for expressions and statements by increasing the firmness. It can be deemed as a transformation of an object or a transit of the dimensions. Even though the plaster bandage appears soft and weak, I talk about the inner sides of women through the paradox in this material. It turns into an ornament to reveal the identities of women.
Uterus. An organ in which a fertilized egg is implanted and a fetus grows. The uterus is a symbolic representation of motherhood. After conception, a fetus develops inside the uterus of a mother while being protected from the outside. The inside of women viewed through the uterus is filled with ambiguous stories. The series of images of maternal instincts among the social conventions, the female figure of an iron hand in a velvet glove; a warm but strict mother and a weak but strong woman are one aspect of the conscious of female existence that must exist while being absent and empty but full at the same time. Intaglio ornaments are a space where women themselves can ask whether they are paradoxical existences.
