처음 구상한 형태는 머릿속에서 출발해 실제로 완성되기까지 여러 단계를 거친다. 이 과정에서 매체가 바뀌고, 재료를 다루는 방식과 예기치 못한 요소들이 개입하며, 처음 생각과는 다른 결과물이 나타나기도 한다. 이러한 차이와 변화에 대한 관심은 자연스럽게 전개도에 대한 탐구로 이어졌다. 전개도는 입체 사물의 구조를 2차원으로 펼쳐 놓은 그림으로, 보통 하나의 정해진 목적을 위해 제작된다. 완성될 형태를 어떻게 해석하느냐에 따라 다양한 전개도가 만들어질 수 있는데, 이 과정에서 전개도는 한 방향만을 지시하는 설계도가 아니라 여러 가능성을 품은 그림이 되기도 한다.
최근 나의 작업은 하나의 직육면체에서 시작되었다. 여섯 개의 직사각형 면으로 이루어진 직육면체는 면을 어떻게 연결하느냐에 따라 다양한 전개도로 펼쳐진다. 그리고 그중 하나를 선택하더라도, 어떻게 접고 어디에서 접기를 멈추는지에 따라 전혀 다른 모습이 나타날 수 있다. 결과가 정해져 있는 것처럼 보이지만 그 안에 수많은 갈림길을 품고 있다는 점에서, 전개도는 우리가 살아가는 방식과 닮아 있다. 우리는 종종 비슷한 목표와 삶의 속도로 향하도록 요구받지만, 결국 각자는 고유한 서사를 지니며 제각기 다른 방향으로 나아간다. 나는 오늘도 전개도를 만들고 접고, 해체하고 다시 연결하며 장신구로 나의 이야기를 기록한다. 그리고 그 과정을 통해 내가 어떤 사람인지 말하고, 더 나아가 세상과 닿기를 바란다. - 이연미
The form I first imagine begins in my mind and passes through several stages before it is completed. As it moves through different materials and processes, the way each person handles the material and the unexpected variables that arise can lead to results that differ from the original idea. My interest in these differences and shifts in the making process naturally led me to explore unfolding diagrams. An unfolding is a drawing that lays out the structure of a three-dimensional object onto a two-dimensional surface, usually created for one clear purpose. Yet depending on how the final form is interpreted, an unfolding can give rise to many different variations. In this process, it becomes not a diagram that points in only one direction, but a drawing that holds multiple possibilities.
My recent work began with a single rectangular cuboid. Its six rectangular faces can be connected in many ways, resulting in a variety of unfoldings. Even when one of them is chosen, the form changes depending on how it is folded and where the folding stops, revealing shapes that may differ entirely from the original intention. Although an unfolding appears to lead toward a fixed result, it contains countless branching paths, just as our lives often unfold through many possible directions. We are often expected to move toward similar goals and at a similar pace, yet each of us carries a unique narrative and moves in our own direction. I continue to create, fold, dismantle, and reconnect unfoldings, recording my story through jewelry. Through this process, I hope to express who I am and find a way to reach the world. - Yeonmi Lee
