무언가를 만드는 손은 언제나 ‘남는 것’에 대해 고민하게 된다. 사물이 오래도록 간직되거나 누군가의 곁에 머물기를 바라는 마음은 때때로 묵직한 책임감으로 다가온다. 그래서 쓸모를 다한 사물이 손끝을 떠나 쓰레기통에 처박힐 때면, 유난히 조용한 무력감이 남는다. 부단히 의미 있는 무언가를 만들겠다던 의지가 문득 낯부끄러워지는 순간이다.
그런 마음이 호박에 시선을 머물게 했다. 화석화된 나무 수지인 호박은 묘하게 따뜻했고, 그 안에 압축된 시간은 떨어져 나온 파편 하나까지도 소중하게 느끼게 했다. 인류의 가장 오래된 장식 재료 중 하나인 호박은 쉽게 버려지지 않는다. 죽어서도 함께하길 바라는 마음으로 주인 곁에 묻혔고, 시간이 흘러 다시 땅 위로 모습을 드러내도 유물로 남는다. 다시는 들춰보고 싶지 않아 깊은 땅속에 은밀히 묻는 쓰레기와는 분명히 다른 궤적이다.
그 경계 어딘가에서, 내가 버린 쓰레기의 잔해들이 호박의 틈을 파고드는 상상을 하지 않을 수 없었다. 그렇게 만들어진 새로운 형상의 호박 장신구는 가장 중심에, 가장 빨리 버려졌던 조각들을 품고 있다. 일회용 숟가락, 배달 용기, 플라스틱 뚜껑과 같은 일상의 부질없는 파편들은 마치 어디론가 떠밀리다 결국 박혀버린 잔해처럼, 호박 속에서 응고되어 낯설고도 익숙한 현실의 단면을 비춘다. 존재의 부정을 되받아치며 사라지길 거부하는 이 조각들은, 화려한 색으로 자신의 신분을 위장한 채, 그렇게 세상에 남아 다시 곁에 머문다. - 김유정
Hands that make are often drawn to the question of what remains. The hope that an object might be kept for years or stay close to someone often carries a quiet sense of responsibility. When an object is deemed no longer useful and ends up in the bin, I’m left with a muted sense of helplessness. In those moments, the desire to create something meaningful can suddenly feel naïve.
That feeling led me to amber. It simply felt warm and comforting. Fossilised over time, even its tiniest fragments seemed to carry quiet value. As one of the oldest materials used for human adornment, amber is rarely discarded. It has been buried with the dead, meant to remain with them. When it resurfaces, it returns not as waste, but as artefact. Its journey is nothing like the things we bury in silence to forget.
Somewhere between those two fates, I began to imagine the debris I had discarded settling into the cracks of amber. From that thought, new forms of amber jewellery started to emerge. Fragments from everyday life—disposable spoons, takeaway containers, plastic lids—feel as though they’ve been swept along and quietly lodged in the amber. There, they reveal a reality that feels both unfamiliar and familiar. Rejecting the denial of their existence, these fragments cloak themselves in vivid colours, disguising their identity as they remain the world -once again finding their way back to us. - Yoojung Kim
