역사 속에서 장식은 성별의 구분보다 존재를 드러내는 언어에 가까웠다.
왕과 장군, 학자와 시인에 이르기까지 많은 이들이 장신구를 통해 명예를 기리고, 애정을 드러내며, 내면의 결을 표현했다. 가슴 위에 놓인 브로치는 단순한 장식이 아니라 말로 설명하기 어려운 세계를 시각적으로 보여주는 방식이었다.
하지만 시대가 흐르며 남성의 장식 문화는 점차 자취를 감추었다. 절제와 단정, 균일함을 미덕으로 삼던 사회적 분위기 속에서 장식은 남성과 멀어졌고, 그와 함께 오랫동안 이어져 온 시각적 표현의 언어도 조용히 사라져갔다.
널리 알려진 격언 “Manners maketh man”은 품성과 태도가 한 사람을 형성한다고 강조한다. 그러나 역사 속 남성들은 장신구를 매개로 또 다른 방식으로 자신을 표현해왔다. 작은 장식들을 통해 자연스럽게 드러나던 차분하고 섬세한 시각적 어휘는 말을 사용하지 않아도 존재를 정리하고 드러내는 역할을 했다.
이 전시에서 장신구는 단순한 장식이 아니다. 정체성을 시각적으로 정리하고, 한 사람이 세상에서 어떤 방식으로 존재하고자 하는지를 드러내는 도구가 된다. 조용히 사라졌던 남성의 장식 언어는 이 전시를 통해 다시 현재적 의미로 자리 잡는다.
Throughout history, adornment has functioned less as a marker of gender and more as a language of presence.
Kings and commanders, scholars and poets alike used jewelry to honor achievements, express affection, and articulate the subtleties of their inner lives. A brooch worn close to the heart served not merely as decoration, but as a visual phrase that conveyed what words could not.
As time passed, however, the tradition of male adornment gradually faded. In societies that valued restraint, uniformity, and modest conduct, ornamentation became increasingly distant from the role expected of men. With this shift, the visual vocabulary that had once accompanied men quietly disappeared.
The well-known phrase “Manners maketh man” emphasizes character and conduct as the foundation of one’s identity. Yet history also holds another mode of expression - a subtle visual language carried through small objects worn on the body. These understated gestures offered a way to organize and present one’s presence without the need for spoken words.
Brooches Maketh Man revisits this overlooked vocabulary of expression. Through brooches, lapel pins, and modest forms of ornament, the exhibition reflects on how men once used adornment as a natural means of presenting themselves - not as excessive embellishment, but as a considered and intentional choice.
In this exhibition, adornment functions as more than decoration. It becomes a way of defining one’s presence and clarifying identity in a visual form. The long-quiet language of male adornment returns here, finding renewed relevance in the present.
